ANN ARBOR – Michigan State’s hockey team salvaged a series split against rival Michigan on Saturday, scoring three unanswered goals for a 3-1 win at Yost Ice Arena.

A high-scoring home-and-home series was expected between two programs with a combined 28 NHL draft picks on their rosters, but goals were at a premium in two tight-checking contents.

The top-ranked Wolverines (16-4, 7-3 Big Ten) blanked the third-ranked Spartans (12-4, 5-3) on Friday 3-0 for their first shutout victory in East Lansing since 2000 and then grabbed an early 1-0 lead Saturday. MSU’s scoring drought continued until late in the second period, when freshman Anthony Romani banked a shot off Michigan goalie Jack Ivankovic from behind the goal line.
