Are you a goomba? Do you have a goomba? Either way, you’re lucky.
Three goombas, Tom Allio, David DiDomenico and Don Ursetti, have written “The Goomba Chronicles,” a raucous jewel of a book about growing up in an idyllic spot called North Hill.
A goomba, according to the book’s glossary, is a very close friend. It is a term of endearment.
Many of the 60 or so stories start with “Do you remember …” and end with “Those were the days, my goombas.”
Quite a few are anecdotes about the seemingly unending contests held by the Italian American community on North Hill in Akron: the ugly bartender contest, the lentil eating contest (many contests involve eating), the Cicada Festival cooking contest.
These have the blush of authenticity, but is it possible the boys were selling Viagra on North H
