COLUMBUS, Ohio — Nearly a year ago, Gov. Mike DeWine suggested to a room full of reporters that he was preparing to make some sort of announcement about Ohio’s broken-down death penalty system.
“We’ve not had any executions since I’ve been governor. We will not as long as I’m governor,” DeWine said on Dec. 12, 2024, during a brunch with the Statehouse press corps at the Ohio governor’s mansion. “In the next few months, I’ll have more to say about it.”
Since then, the Greene County Republican has not had more to say about it. But on Thursday, he hinted that when his announcement does eventually come, it will be to declare his opposition to capital punishment.
