The next round of snow and a wintry mix is set to arrive later this week, following a stretch of dry but cold weather across the Northeast.
A cold air mass will keep temperatures well below normal Sunday, Dec. 7, and Monday, Dec. 8, but conditions will remain quiet until late in the week, according to the National Weather Service.
The forecast calls for the arrival of snow overnight Thursday, Dec. 11, into Friday, Dec. 12, with a chance of rain and snow mixing in by Friday as temperatures hover in the 20s.
The chance for snow continues Friday night, with another round possible Saturday morning, Dec. 13, before skies turn partly sunny.
AccuWeather meteorologists say waves of Arctic air sweeping in through mid-December are likely to bring not only bitter cold but also several opportunities for snow, flurries, and heavier squalls.
These bursts of winter weather could lead to slippery roads and travel disruptions, especially as untreated surfaces freeze overnight.
"The fast movement of the waves of cold air will generally prevent giant snowstorms from developing," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said. "However, the best chance for a rapidly intensifying storm on the East Coast would be around Dec. 12 or so, as an Alberta clipper storm may slow down just enough as it reaches the Atlantic to grab extra moisture."
If the system develops as forecast, enough snow could fall to require shoveling and plowing in heavily populated areas of the mid-Atlantic and New England.
Forecasters warn that as temperatures drop behind each snow event, any wet areas left untreated could freeze into a thin sheet of ice, raising the risk of slick travel.
