BREVARD — As the clock trickled down in the waning minutes, the Brevard football team could sense it. Players and coaches were hugging and high-fiving each other. The offense then took one more kneel down, and Brevard burst from the sideline to begin the celebration.

Top-seeded Brevard sealed a 30-13 victory over No. 6 Maiden (9-5) in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A West Regional Final to advance to the state championship game for the first time since 1982. Brevard (14-0) will face Reidsville (12-2), the top seed in the 4A East, for the state title on Dec. 13 at Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory at 11 a.m.
