James Franklin is hiring someone familiar to him — and familiar to Virginia Tech — to serve as a high-level staffer on his coaching staff with the Hokies.
Franklin is hiring Brent Pry as Virginia Tech’s defensive coordinator, according to a report from on3 .
Pry, the former Penn State assistant, was most recently Virginia Tech’s head coach.
Pry was fired by Virginia Tech in September after an 0-3 start to the season. The 55-year-old had a 16-24 record through three-plus seasons in Blacksburg. And now, he’s staying at Virginia Tech but with a lesser role — a move some believe could be awkward.
But prior to being hired by Virginia Tech, Pry was a Franklin lifer. Pry was on Franklin’s staff at Vanderbilt from 2011-13 and then followed him to Penn State.
