The Israeli Prime Minister said the second phase of a US plan to end the war in Gaza was close and that there was a workable path to peace with Israel’s Palestinian neighbours.

The visit of the first European leader since the official end of the war may signal a new chapter in Israel’s relations with the EU.

But he and the German Chancellor disagreed openly about a whole range of issues, crucial for the path ahead.
