Indianapolis Colts quarterback Riley Leonard (15) warms up before playing against the Atlanta Falcons during the NFL Berlin Game at Olympic Stadium in Germany on Nov. 9, 2025.

The Indianapolis Colts lost starting quarterback Daniel Jones to a non-contact Achilles injury early in their Week 14 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The injury occurred when Jones faded back to pass on a third down in the first quarter of Sunday's game. The 28-year-old was in pain immediately, reaching for his injury right leg and pounding the turf in frustration following the injury.

Jones was able to slowly get off the field under his own power. He hobbled into the locker room, with Colts medical staff in tow, and was quickly ruled out for the remainder of the contest.

Now, the Colts will need to rely on their backup quarterback to guide them through the remainder of their Week 14 game – and perhaps beyond.

Who is the Colts' backup quarterback? Here's what to know about the team's depth chart behind Jones.

Who is the Colts backup QB?

Riley Leonard is presently the Colts backup quarterback and came into the game after Jones was injured.

Leonard was a sixth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft after helping lead Notre Dame to an appearance in the national championship game. The 6-4, 213-pound quarterback played one season for Notre Dame after transferring from Duke, completing 66.7% of his passes for 2,861 yards, 21 touchdowns and eight interceptions while adding 906 yards and 17 scores on the ground.

Leonard entered Week 14 having played just six offensive snaps during his NFL career. He was 0-for-2 passing and added one yards on one carry across his minimal playing time.

What happened to Anthony Richardson?

Richardson began the season as Indianapolis' starting quarterback, but the No. 4 overall pick from the 2023 NFL Draft suffered a fractured orbital bone during pregame warmups against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 6. He was placed on IR and has remained there since.

The Colts have not opened Richardson's practice window and the organization hasn't yet outlined a potential timeline for his return.
