DEARBORN — AAA is urging drivers to take extra precautions when hauling home their freshly cut Christmas trees this season.

The agency warns that an unsecured tree can damage your vehicle and become a dangerous hazard on the highway.

“Nothing ruins holiday spirit faster than watching a tree bounce off a moving car,” said AAA spokeswoman Adrienne Woodland.

A recent AAA study found nearly one in five buyers have had a tree fall off or out of their vehicle, contributing to the 200,000 debris-related crashes reported each year.

To prevent accidents, AAA recommends wrapping the tree in netting, loading it trunk-first, and securing it tightly with strong ropes or straps.

Drivers are also urged to check the tree before leaving the lot to make sure it won’t shift on the road.
