CALDWELL COUNTY, N.C. — A man died Saturday after a state trooper encountered him armed with a handgun at a traffic crash scene, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol .
NCSHP said a trooper was dispatched to the collision at 4:21 p.m. on Grace Chapel Road in the Granite Falls community in Caldwell County. First responders on scene reported before the trooper's arrival that someone involved in the crash was armed with a handgun.
The agency said when Senior Trooper William Miller arrived, he encountered the armed individual, according to the Highway Patrol. The agency said at that point, 48-year-old Scott Patrick Seagle of Hickory displayed a handgun and didn't comply with Miller's commands. Miller then fired his service pistol, striking Seagle.
