LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The Jackson County Veterans Council held its fourth annual Pearl Harbor Day observance ceremony on Saturday to honor the lives lost in the attack.
On December 7, 1941, 84 years ago, the Japanese Empire launched an air raid on the U.S. Pacific Fleet in Oahu, Hawaii. The attack killed more than 2,400 people and plunged the U.S. into World War II.
The USS Arizona was one of the first battleships hit, killing 1,177 servicemen, including 28 sailors and Marines from Michigan.
A piece of the USS Arizona now lies in Sparks Foundation Park. It’s the only piece of the ship given to Michigan.
