Ed Sheeran is standing by his choice to write openly about the highs and lows of his relationship with his wife, Cherry Seaborn. The 34-year-old singer, who headlined the opening night of Capital’s Jingle Bell Ball with Barclaycard at The O2 last weekend, said his music has always reflected the full range of emotions not just the moments that look perfect from the outside.

Speaking at a Spotify pop-up event ahead of the show, Sheeran explained why some of his recent songs delve into difficult or intensely personal topics. “Sometimes people listen to records today and assume that what that song is, is their world 100 per cent at the time,” he said.
