MONTANA - The Montana Department of Justice’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) has issued a warning about fraudulent websites posing as county jails to scam families of inmates.
These fake sites, such as musselshellcountyjail.org , pretend to be the Musselshell County Detention Center. They offer false services like inmate lookup, mailing and money instructions, and misleading facility information. The OCP said it has discovered similar scams across the state.
To avoid falling victim, OCP advises Montanans to verify website links, ensuring they end with .mt.gov or are official county sites. Montanans should recognize red flags, such as requests to mail money orders to P.O. Boxes, which Montana jails never do.
