As the Supreme Court on Monday mandated 30 per cent women representation in state bar councils where elections are pending, with 20 per cent seats filled by election and 10 per cent by co-option for this year, the lawyers representing the petitioners hailed the direction, calling it a “giant leap towards an equal India” while underlining the long walk to achieving 50 per cent equality.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of Indian Surya Kant further directed submission of co-option proposals for councils lacking sufficient women advocates.

Senior advocate Shobha Gupta and advocate Charu Mathur , were at the forefront of the legal fight for the petitioners, Yogamaya and Shehla Chaudhary, respectively.
