Seattle police say an elderly woman survived a horrifying and vicious attack in downtown Seattle Friday.

They say a man struck her in the face with a big wooden stick that had a metal screw sticking out of the end of it.

Investigators say it’s not the first time this suspect has hurt someone.

They say he has a history of violence.

Just before noon, police say the man walked up from behind the 75-year-old victim, as she waited for the light to turn at a crosswalk at 3 rd and James.

Witnesses say the woman immediately fell backwards onto the ground.

She had a cut to her face that was badly bleeding.

Several bystanders tried to help her.
