It’s always a gamble whether gifts or greeting cards will be on time for the holidays. Pushing off that visit to the post office is easy. Then suddenly, it’s too late.

In 1998, computer users found a way around the dilemma with cutting-edge technology by sending cards through the internet. Not only could the senders find cooler cards online, they also didn’t have to pay for postage.

More serious card senders could buy a CD-ROM with programs to design their own.

Some featured animated reindeer running in front of Santa’s sleigh, while others featured the bearded man himself.
