Drivers could be hit with fines reaching £5,000 if they travel with their pet cat or dog in their vehicle. Under Labour Party government law, all animals must be correctly secured when travelling in a moving vehicle to avoid distractions and potential collisions.

Failure to comply with this regulation could lead to a £1,000 penalty or even prosecution, where fines can rise substantially. Rule 57 of the Highway Code states: "When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly.
