Frustrated by the D.C. Council modifying or outright overturning ballot measures to eliminate the subminimum wage for tipped workers, a coalition of labor and advocacy groups on Monday filed an initiative that would raise the minimum wage to $25 an hour for the entire city workforce. Organizers believe the measure will not only have broad appeal among low-wage employees and allies but also make the initiative more politically bulletproof from council interference.
The initiative, D.C. Living Wage for All Amendment Act, would gradually increase the minimum wage in Washington to $25 an hour by July 2029.
