KALKASKA COUNTY, MI – Two people died after falling through ice on a small lake in Northern Michigan, police said.

Johnathan Brake, 22, and a 13-year-old male died after falling through the ice on Island Lake on Saturday in Kalkaska County, according to a news release from the Kalaska County Sheriff Patrick Whiteford. A 14-year-old male who also fell through the ice crawled out of the frigid water and yelled for help.

Deputies with the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched just before 11 p.m. to the lake, near the intersection of Island Lake and Dockery roads, according to the sheriff’s news release. Brake’s girlfriend had gone out looking for the group, heard the 14-year-old yelling for help and called 911.
