BRIDGEPORT, Neb. (KOLN) - Two iconic rock formations in Nebraska’s Panhandle continue to draw visitors, and the rocks also help share the history of several historic trails that passed nearby.
Courthouse and Jail Rocks, located along the Highway 26 corridor in western Nebraska, are made of sandstone and clay-like materials similar to the composition of Chimney Rock, according to Broc Anderson with the Nebraska State Historical Society.
“It’s really more of a sandstone kind of material,” Anderson said. Anderson points out the formations are part of a series of underappreciated landmarks along the Highway 26 corridor that includes Coyote Rock and Castle Rock.
