Four children and one adult died Sunday in a fire at a home in the Central California city of Porterville, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded at about 11:18 p.m. to the home in the area of South Indiana Street and encountered “significant fire involvement,” the Porterville Fire Department said.

Crews entered the home and pulled the four children and adult out, but they did not survive, according to the fire department.

“This is a devastating loss for the family and for our community,” Porterville fire Chief Bryan Cogburn said in a statement. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones affected by this tragedy.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the fire department said. No firefighters were injured.
