MALIBU, Calif. (KABC) -- The city of Malibu City Council voted unanimously to move ahead with a plan to separate from the Santa Monica-Malibu School District.

The plan creates an independent school district that addresses the unique needs of the community.

The latest vote comes after public comment, which was also unanimous, when it came to the split.

District board members also voted in favor of the split agreement last week.

The plan will lay out the financial, operational and governing structure for the transition.

Some parents are in favor of the split, with many saying it's something community members have been pushing for for decades.
