HONOLULU — Ahead of the 84th anniversary of the USS Arizona sinking at Pearl Harbor, the U.S. Navy has completed an operation intended to relieve some stress off of the ship's wreckage.
About 150 tons of concrete platforms were recently lifted off the USS Arizona after sitting on the site for decades. The platforms were originally installed to help salvage guns and ammunition from the destroyed battleship.
Named after the Grand Canyon State, the USS Arizona battleship was sunk during the Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941. Hundreds of people were killed in the attack, which resulted in the United States entering World War II.
The shipwreck remains at the bottom of Pearl Harbor and a memorial now rests above it.
