A 78-year-old Merseyside nan has been given a conditional discharge after she was put in handcuffs for refusing to give her name to a police officer. A magistrates court heard Sandra Verkade, who has no previous convictions, was an “upstanding member of the community” in Hoylake.

Appearing in Liverpool Magistrates Court on December 8, Verkade, 78, of Cable Road in Hoylake pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to give her name and address to a constable, engaging in anti-social behaviour. She was given a conditional discharge of 24 weeks for the offence and was told by the court to pay a total of £111.

It had been alleged the charge was related to activity linked to regular protests, which have been taking place
