CHARLESTON, W.Va. — With much of Southern West Virginia under winter weather alerts from the National Weather Service, some school districts in the region have taken the precaution of delaying classes for Tuesday.

A storm system moved through the southern region of the state Monday, dropping snow across the area. The forecast had prompted 16 counties to close schools Monday, with another eight counties dismissing early.

A cluster of counties including Kanawha, Boone, Clay and parts of Raleigh, Fayette and Nicholas were issued a winter storm warning late Monday morning that remains in effect through 9 p.m.

Winter weather advisories remain in effect for much of the southern region. While some counties had alerts that expired at 5 p.m., others remain under alert until 9 p.m.
