A Minneapolis area mosque is a total loss after a fire early Monday.

Jaylani Hussein is the Executive Director of the Council on American-Islamic Relations. He says over the past three years, Minnesota has faced the worst level of mosque attacks in the nation, with more than 40 incidents and over $3 million in damages.

He says authorities are still investigating this fire in Prior Lake at the Masjid Hamza AI-Mahmood Foundation and Baitul Hikmah Academy and they do not know if it was arson.

Officials say no one was in the building at the time.

Minnesota has a large Somali community, who are mostly Muslim.

Recent statements by President Donald Trump and top administration officials disparaging Minnesota’s Somali community have focused renewed attention on the immigrants from the war-torn east African country and their descendants.
