A Long Island mother and her special needs son who died in a house fire are being remembered for their kindness, courage, and the love they shared.
Christine Lehmann, 52, and her son, Nicholas, 25, were killed when flames tore through their Smithtown home on Fifty Acres Road around 3:15 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, as Daily Voice reported.
A third resident, 91-year-old Ronald Montagna, was rescued from the burning house and taken to Stony Brook University Hospital with smoke inhalation and burns, according to Suffolk County Police.
Multiple 911 callers reported the home engulfed in flames, prompting a large response from the St. James Fire Department and several neighboring agencies. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Homicide Squad and Arson Section but appears non-criminal, police said.
In a GoFundMe campaign organized by the Lehmann family, relatives described Nicholas as “one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet — gentle, kind, and loving to everyone around him.” They remembered Christine as “a hero in her last moments” and said the loss has forever changed their family.
“More than 80 brave firefighters fought with everything they had to save them,” the family wrote, adding that the fundraiser aims to help others in their memory. Donations will support programs for children and adults with special needs, as well as provide resources or appreciation for first responders.
“We are creating this GoFundMe to honor Nicholas and Christine’s memory in a way that reflects who they were and the love they brought into the world,” the organizers wrote. “Your support… ensures that the kindness and spirit of Nicholas and Christine continue to live on through others.”
