KALKASKA COUNTY — A late-night search on Island Lake ended in tragedy after two teens died and another survived when all three fell through thin ice, according to the Kalkaska County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were dispatched just before 11 p.m. Saturday after someone was heard yelling for help on the lake. Sheriff Patrick Whiteford says dispatchers were able to narrow down the location, allowing deputies to reach the area near Island Lake Road and Dockery Road within minutes.

A 14-year-old boy had managed to crawl out of the broken ice and continue calling for help. A responding deputy reached him on the unstable surface, brought him back to shore, and kept him warm until EMS arrived. The teen was taken to Kalkaska Memorial Health Center, treated, and released.
