AIKEN, S.C. —
An Aiken, South Carolina, woman has been accused of falsely reporting her car as stolen.
According to the arrest warrant, Dearra Lashay Griffin submitted a false claim to GEICO Indemnity Company on July 10, 2023. Griffin reported to GEICO that her 2017 Kia Sportage was stolen from Interstate 20, near mile marker 33 on July 9, 2023.
GEICO was contacted by a local repair facility and advised that the insured vehicle had been on the repair facility's lot since July 6, 2023.
Griffin admitted to investigators that she falsely reported the claim to GEICO due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said that Griffin received $15,010 from the false claim.
