NEEDHAM, Mass. —

WCVB NewsCenter 5's beloved assistant news director, Gerry Wardwell, retires Monday.

He first joined the newsroom as an executive producer in 1998 before being promoted to managing editor for eight years, and then he was promoted to assistant news director in 2008. Wardwell led award-winning coverage on major events like the Boston Marathon bombings, the capture of Whitey Bulger, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter protests, the deaths of Sen. Edward Kennedy and Boston Mayor Tom Menino, numerous elections, and the political unrest and riot at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Through his leadership and mentorship, Wardwell made an indelible impact on the coverage and the people of WCVB.
