A 22-year-old Fort Lee man was hospitalized in critical condition after an e-bike crash in Teaneck on Monday night, Dec. 8, police said.

The e-bike operator was heading east along the center median of Degraw Avenue near Frank W. Burr Boulevard, and abruptly entered the roadway in an attempt to cross the eastbound lanes when he was struck by a 20-year-old Teaneck woman in the center lane at approximately 6:30 p.m., Teaneck Police Chief Andrew McGurr said Tuesday morning, Dec. 9.

The e-bike rider was found breathing but unconscious and appeared to have sustained serious injuries, police said. Officers began life-saving measures before members of the Teaneck Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Holy Name Medical Center Advanced Life Support, and the Teaneck Fire Department arrived to assist, according to the report. The man was transported to Hackensack University Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.

The driver of the vehicle stayed at the scene and cooperated fully with detectives on Monday, police said. She was not injured and had a valid driver’s license. A witness who remained on scene also assisted by helping to block traffic, according to the release.

Eastbound Degraw Avenue was temporarily closed to allow emergency crews to work and for detectives to conduct a preliminary on-scene investigation, police said. The Bergen County Sheriff’s Office Bureau of Criminal Identification documented the scene.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Teaneck Police Department at 201-837-2600 or Crime Stoppers at 844-466-6789. Tips may be submitted anonymously at bergencrimestoppers.org.

McGurr thanked the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office for their help and reminded residents of key safety rules for e-bike riders, including obeying traffic laws, riding predictably, using designated areas, wearing safety gear, and operating at safe speeds.
