COLUMBUS, Ohio (WOIO) - Judge Edmund A. Sargus says he will decide on Tuesday whether or not the People of Ohio’s argument that the Department of Unclaimed Funds giving $600M to the Cleveland Browns is unconstitutional.
If Sargus sides with the People the State would be able to appeal, however, it would be a massive blow to the funding for the proposed dome stadium in Brook Park.
The Browns would need to find an alternative way to fund the state’s portion, which was due to be paid to the team on January 1, 2026.
The People are arguing that the state using unclaimed funds for a private stadium is “unlawful seizure of private property”. They are asking the judge to stop the way the Department of Unclaimed Funds operates, and to pause the payment due to the Browns on New Years Day.
