TOLEDO, Ohio — A downtown business owner says his next venture has nothing to do with coffee and everything to do with providing dignity and shelter to Toledo’s homeless population.

Jacob Estrada, owner of Lowrider Cafe, has begun the process of inquiring about purchasing or receiving a vacant Catholic church from the Diocese of Toledo, with the vision of converting the property into a homeless shelter and support center.

Estrada, who previously worked for Cherry Street Mission Ministries for 13 years, said the recent death of 66-year-old Richard Kwapich, a homeless Toledo man found dead after dying of hypothermia on Nov. 30, pushed him to act.

"There's times when unfortunate events take place that actually put things in the motion," Estrada said.
