Santa Maria girls basketball coach Erik Ramos was completely honest with his team after they started slowly against Farmersville on Saturday afternoon.
“I told them that three points in the first quarter isn’t going to get it done,” Ramos said.
Those three points came off of three free throws but, after the Saints returned to the court in the second quarter, their demeanor changed.
The team responded with a 21-4 run and waltzed to a 40-22 win at Santa Maria High School.
“They didn’t shy away from the challenge,” Ramos said. “I was proud of them. We were able to pull out a good win.”
The Saints got their first field goal early in the second quarter with a 3-pointer by Suzanna Tellez. Carolina Jimenez added a 3-pointer of her own, and Santa Maria finished the half on a 12-0 run.
