LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) - The future of a place many are calling a community staple, Baxter Avenue Theatres, is up in the air, and thousands have come together to sign a petition to keep it around.

For years, the theater has been a place to see local and independent films you couldn’t see anywhere else.

After rumors about its closing swirled on social media, a local filmmaker, Emmett Swann, decided to start that petition and has now gained almost 5,000 signatures in less than two weeks.

“There’s no other source of outward support for grassroots indie filmmaking in Louisville, or even in like, the state,” said Swann.
