GRAND ISLAND, Neb (KSNB) — Students at Trinity Lutheran School received free pizza and a new American flag from the United Veterans Club in recognition of their service to local veterans.

The students were honored because they helped distribute more than 400 handwritten gift cards to veterans during a ceremony last month.

“We sent some to Grand Generational Center, but we also sent them to some other places,” said Andy Rathe, Principal at Trinity Lutheran.

Verne Hill of the United Veterans Club said the recognition was reciprocal.

“The young people passed out dinner to us,” Hill said. “So as a thank you, we passed out dinners to them.”

The veterans also helped students raise and lower a new American flag, replacing the school’s worn flag.
