New Delhi: India’s plan to induct a leased nuclear powered submarine from Russia is moving forward but with a revised delivery timeline. The submarine which will be commissioned as INS Chakra 3 is now expected to arrive between 2027 and 2028 instead of the earlier estimate of 2025.
Government officials have clarified that the submarine deal is not new but part of an agreement signed in 2019. The vessel identified as the Russian Akula class submarine K 391 Bratsk is undergoing a major refit and modernisation program in Russia before it can be handed over to the Indian Navy.
Reports say the submarine will receive upgraded systems including Indian made communication and sensor equipment. However because of its age and the scale of refurbishment there have been delays. International sanct
