All Creatures Great and Small is returning to Channel 5 on Christmas Eve for a festive special titled Comfort and Joy, following an emotional season six finale. The special is set in 1945, the first peacetime Christmas after the war, and James Herriot (played by Nicholas Ralph) is put in charge of the Darrowby nativity play.

With Helen (Rachel Shenton) ill and unable to help, James struggles to juggle the various challenges and calls on Mrs Pumphrey (Patricia Hodge) for some much-needed support. Mrs Pumphrey knows the show must go on and helps pull off a rather special nativity that lifts everyone’s spirits.

James actor Nicholas Ralph spoke to Reach and other press about creating the chaotic nativity and he revealed his co-star Samuel West's real children star in the performance.
