America is a creative place. About 42% of Nobel Prizes have been awarded to Americans.
How does a Nobel Prize winner in science become so immersed in research that he or she makes those fantastic discoveries? I doubt it is by tinkering in their garage (apologies to the Wright brothers).
About 70% made their discoveries at American universities. Our universities are a hotbed of innovation. And a significant stimulus for that innovation is the money provided by our federal government for research. These grants really ramped up during World War II for the development of weapons but have continued to this day for all kinds of research.
