A man with autism who was controversially sacked by Waitrose after stacking shelves for four years without pay has finally been given a job at the supermarket.
Tom Boyd, 28, ended up at the centre of a disability row earlier this year after his mum, Frances Boyd, asked whether he could begin taking on some paid work at the supermarket in Cheadle Hulme , Stockport . He was turned down, however, by head office, prompting his mum to speak out.
Tom had volunteered at the store for four years, accompanied by a support worker. His mum, Frances, said he'd given more than 600 hours of his time 'purely because he wanted to belong, contribute and make a difference'.
