The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has been urged to crack down on the volume of illegal number plate sellers in the UK.

According to a new report by the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Transport Safety (APPGTS), record-high number plate thefts and the rise of illegal number plate sellers are now being linked to wider threats to national security and road safety.

With online marketplaces allowing almost anyone to sell number plates without proper documentation checks, the report warns that criminals are exploiting regulatory gaps to produce cloned or fake plates - many later used in offences ranging from fuel theft and toll evasion to more serious crimes.
