People are being evacuated due to a gas leak in Blackfriars which has seen a 100 metre cordon put in place this afternoon (Tuesday, December 9).

Several buildings have been evacuated as a precaution while firefighters work to make the scene safe.

New Bridge Street is blocked both ways from Queen Victoria Street to Farringdon Street, Fleet Street.

The public are being urged to avoid the area wherever possible.

The Brigade was called at 10.59am. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Dowgate, Soho, Kentish Town and Clapham fire stations are at the scene.
