As Japan assesses the damage from a late-night 7.5 magnitude earthquake, videos circling on social media have shown the moment the tremor hit.
One clip shows people holding onto belongings and filming as the quake shakes the apartment.
Japanese authorities have cautioned the public over potential aftershocks after the initial earthquake struck around 11:15 p.m local time on Monday.
It was centered in the Pacific Ocean, around 80 kilometers (50 miles) off the coast of Aomori, northernmost prefecture of Japan’s main Honshu island.
At least 34 people were injured, one seriously, the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said.
Most of them were hit by falling objects, public broadcaster NHK reported.
