The B.C. Coroners Service said it will hold an inquest into the police-shooting death of a 15-year-old Surrey teen earlier this year.

Chase de Balinhard was fatally shot on Feb. 9, 2025 by Surrey police. According to the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., the teen had called 911, reporting he was suicidal, autistic, and had a gun.

B.C.’s Public Safety Ministry announced the inquest on Monday, a few days after the civilian police watchdog issued a report that found there were no reasonable grounds to believe officers committed an offence in de Balinhard’s death.

The ministry said the public inquiry is mandatory for deaths that occur while a person was detained or in the custody of a peace officer.
