After hiring fired head coach Brent Pry back as the defensive coordinator at Virginia Tech, James Franklin is looking to his old Penn State staff to fill the offensive coordinator position.

According to ESPN's Pete Thamel, Penn State co-offensive coordinator and tight ends coach Ty Howle will join Franklin as the Hokies' new offensive coordinator. Howle, a Penn State alum, has been on staff in State College since 2020 — first as an analyst, then as the tight ends coach before adding the co-offensive coordinator title in 2023.

Howle was promoted to co-offensive coordinator when the Nittany Lions fired Mike Yurcich in 2023, but he did not hold play-calling duties the last two seasons. That will change in 2026 as he joins Franklin in Blacksburg.

During his tenure at Penn State, Howle produced quite a few NFL tight ends, including last year's Mackey Award winner, Tyler Warren. Now, he's heading to the ACC to run Franklin's offense.
