More Alabama cities are joining a lawsuit against the Alabama Department of Revenue seeking to change the way the state distribute its Simplified Sellers Use Tax.

The Madison City Council voted to join the lawsuit Monday, a day ahead of the deadline.

The council issued a statement after the vote:

“After conducting a work session last Wednesday night to learn how local Madison tax dollars are redistributed under the current Simplified Sellers Use Tax (SSUT) law, the Madison City Council voted to approve a resolution supporting the City of Tuscaloosa’s efforts in seeking appropriate application of SSUT law that does not divert significant tax revenue away from local governments and school systems in communities where taxable sales occur.
