British Heart Foundation recognises Derry man’s ’outstanding contribution’ to CPR training in NI

John Deery from Co Londonderry won a community resuscitation champion accolade at the Heart Hero Awards.

The event, organised by the British Heart Foundation (BHF), took place at Bloomsbury Ballroom.

Mr Deery received an award for his ‘outstanding contribution to improving lifesaving skills in Northern Ireland.’

The 64-year-old had a cardiac arrest at the Belfast Marathon in May 2024. His life was saved by bystanders who performed CPR and defibrillation.

He explained: “Nineteen months ago, my heart stopped for six and a half minutes when I had a cardiac arrest at the Belfast Marathon.
