Fears of violence after large-scale disorder in a UK town have led police to urgently introduce special powers.
In recent days more than 100 youths have been involved in violence in Oldham town centre, with fights breaking out and fireworks thrown. Now Greater Manchester Police have introduced a Section 35 dispersal order and Section 60 stop and search powers in a bid to stop the trouble escalating.
The Section 35 order allows officers to exclude a person, or people, from the area for up to 48 hours through a written notice. The Section 60 grants officers extended powers to stop and search individuals within the area for 24 hours. Both measures were brought in from 1.25pm on Tuesday.
A huge brawl broke out when a group of men gathered in Oldham at around 5pm on Thursday. Chaos quickly followed as the altercation escalated.
So far, five arrests have been made, two for violent disorder and three for possession of offensive weapons. A GMP statement said neighbourhood officers will maintain a high-visibility presence in the area and will use these powers where necessary to keep the public safe.
Inspector Amie Whitehead, Neighbourhood Inspector Oldham South & West said: "These measures are in place to prevent further disorder and ensure the safety of those living, working and visiting Oldham Town Centre. We will not tolerate antisocial behaviour and will take robust action against anyone involved.
“These powers are crucial to preventing any further offences from taking place. If you have any concerns or any information, then please speak to those officers who are there to help.”
