President Donald Trump struck a hard line against his European counterparts in an interview with Politico, blasting leaders as "weak" and saying most European nations "are decaying."
The president was asked during the interview, released Tuesday, about Europe's steadfast support for Ukraine in its war against Russia.
Trump responded that Europe is "not doing a good job."
"They talk too much and they're not producing. We're talking about Ukraine. They talk, but they don't produce. And the war just keeps going on and on," Trump said.
Trump is pushing Ukraine to agree to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal that would include ceding territory to Russia.
European leaders are working to ensure that any ceasefire is backed by solid security guarantees both from Europe and the U.S. to deter Russia from attacking again. Trump has not given explicit guarantees in public.
Trump also criticized European nations for failing to curb migration, saying, "they're weak."
"But they also want to be so politically correct, I think they dont't know what to do. Europe doesn't know what to do," he said.
