When Wilmer “Win” Abbott drove into Woodstock for his job interview, one of the first things he noticed was a sign along the hill coming off Interstate 81 — the roadside placard recognizing the local Jaycees chapter.

“At a critical time in my life I joined the Wilmington, Delaware, Jaycees, the largest chapter in the state,” he said. “That really was very helpful in getting me fully plugged into community service.”

Those early ties to civic work shaped how Abbott sees public service and the role he begins Jan. 15 as Woodstock’s new director of community development. The position will help guide the town’s long-range planning, economic development and implementation of its recently adopted comprehensive plan.
